I thought you would have fought

In the beginning

we listened to the sea at night

I thought we were going to listen to it

all our lives

your tongue a flame in mouth

I thought

you would have fought

we ended up listening to the same sea

on different shores

you wanted a new sea

a new night

a new me

I thought

you would have fought

is anything truly new?

isn’t new just the old polished?

aren’t we all born old?

our new soft bones

compacted dust from dead stars

I thought

you would have fought

maybe you’re right

maybe we shouldn’t rage against the dying of the light

maybe we should light another candle

using the old flame

before it flickers out

but I thought

you would have fought
