Weights

1.

Your hand resting above my heart
flipped it would fall
and fill your palm

I like to think the heart weighs
roughly the same
as the hand that holds it

the same as a clump of earth
held together by the roots
of a pulled up sunflower

2.

I’ve heard it said
you lose 21 grams
after your last breath
that’s too precise
I imagine that weight
the same as a wrens
flitting between
shreds of sunlight
in the dark hedgerow
of your heart

3.

I want the weight of sunlight
dusting my skin
making me still as snow
reflecting touch
brightening shadows

4.

I want to be made darker
by the weight of your brightness
snow on a branch

  1. Fell in love with this when I heard you read it at the Bread and Roses this month – especially the lines: “I like to think the heart weighs // roughly the same // as the hand that holds it” and the idea and imagery of the wren behind 21 grams being “too precise”. Looking forward to hearing you at the next event! These images that go with the words are incredible, too! Cheers, Dan
