Candles

Candles

1.

breadcrumbs from the sun

2.

crushed clouds
fill your body

love is the flame
that sips at the dark vein

turning everything clear

3.

a parachutist on a planet
with barely any gravity
I watch the flame
free-fall slow into you
collapsing into the billows
of its own dress
a shipwreck settling
into the silt of your heart
there it flickers
gifting shadows of starlings
to walls that have
never known sky

4.

I plant candles for you
single petal flowers
that sink slow as the tide
slow as the vanishing
of a snow man
till only the black coals
of the eyes remain
staring at the sun
rising as slow
as the candles
lowering their flags

5.

is that all we’re doing
cupping a candle
against the dark
carrying it across
a storm swept plain
trying to prevent
wind and whispers
tugging free
its remaining wing

6.

at the heart of the glacier
carved out a womb for itself
ear flitting to each wall
listening to the sun

7.

I was looking for
the quiet candle

the first one that was lit
whispered you alive

I wanted that one
to cup to the end

spilling its petals
into the nest of my hands

you wanted the constant fury
of the furnace

only when everything burning
did you feel alive

8.

everything
is full of fire
hold the candle
up to the dark
examine the silence
see its desire
just for a whisper

9.

In the morning
prayer scribbled
all over the ceiling
