White Poplar Trees

Wind peels back their leaves
reveals the dusty silver of their bellies
they dare not shine
their softness will settle one day in the grass
plectrums of frosted sunlight
embedded in the silt of the seabed
splinters of light pushed deeper into our palms
their tips sipping the dark currents
of our blood
