Fatherhood

Fatherhood

1.

Navigating the canal
you wanted to skim the edges
to run your fingers along the blade
you didn’t believe you could bleed
you scrape the length of your side
the opposite of a ploughed field
brightness uncurled from beneath

I pulled us back
to where you didn’t want to be
the safety of the centre
I see your scars in the stillness
already starting to rust

2.

love folded and unfolded
a thousand times
shadows and sunlight
collect in the creases
of our palms
the scars I gave you
same as the ones
I was given
