Mercury

no. 1 – a poem for each planet in our solar system

Mercury

You shrunk
trying to touch the sun
fire washed away
your skin and wings

longed to be
a cloud of sardines
flaring like a cloak
in the seas of the sun

scorched to the core
pure bone
marrow still molten
quick-silver

writhing like snakes
being strangled
